Supporting Maine and New Hampshire’s Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PH, or PAH) Community
PULMONARY HYPERTENSION (PH, or PAH), is high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs that can lead to heart failure. It is rare, but it strikes people of all ages. It is a life-threatening and life-changing disease that is difficult to diagnose. It has few treatments and no cure.
The first symptom most patients notice is difficulty catching their breath when they walk uphill.
OUR MISSION To support and sustain our friends and neighbors in Maine and New Hampshire’s pulmonary hypertension community on their journey toward a cure.
In fact, patients suffering from severe PH may struggle to climb even a few stairs. But with your help, PH/PAH patients can make an even greater uphill journey. UPHILL JOURNEYS was started by patients and caregivers in a hospital room at Maine Medical Center to support and sustain the local pulmonary arterial hypertension community on the journey toward finding a cure. Today, UPHILL JOURNEYS is a not-for-profit, local community initiative organized by patients, their caregivers and families determined to make a difference.
The uphill journey of a pulmonary arterial hypertension patient can be easier if they can be diagnosed earlier. Our goal: a faster, more accurate diagnosis for every PH/PAH patient in Maine and New Hampshire.
UPHILL JOURNEYS developed and supports an online resource center, where physicians across the region can learn how to diagnose pulmonary arterial hypertension as soon as possible, coordinate with specialists and access the latest care protocols. UPHILL JOURNEYS also raises awareness among physicians of the symptoms of pulmonary arterial hypertension, and how to properly test for the disease. And UPHILL JOURNEYS contributes to the worldwide search for new, less invasive treatments and a cure for pulmonary arterial hypertension through PHA, the Pulmonary Hypertension Association.
